When you think of ultrasound technology, you probably call to mind doctor’s offices, which have big machinery and a computer monitor that lets you see what is going on inside your body. That is known as diagnostic ultrasound, but did you know that there is also therapeutic ultrasound that can help your body to recover from injuries? And now, thanks to the remarkable sam® device, you can take ultrasound therapy with you wherever you go! Read this blog post to learn all the basics about this remarkable, portable treatment.

What Is sam®?

sam® is an acronym that stands for Sustained Acoustic Medicine. It is a wearable device that delivers low-intensity ultrasound waves to the site of injured tissues. It increases blood vessel diameter, which improves the delivery of oxygen and healing factors to damaged areas. It also encourages the removal of biological waste. The goal of sam® therapy is to reduce pain, promote healing, and reduce the need for opioid pain medication.

What Issues Can sam® Treat?

sam® has already been used to treat more than 300,000 patients with various musculoskeletal conditions. It may be able to help you if you have any of the following problems:

  • Rotator cuff strains
  • Tennis elbow
  • Knee pain
  • Tendinitis
  • Other types of sprains and strains

sam® is only available via prescription, so you should consult with a qualified orthopedic doctor to find out if it is right for your particular situation.

How Does sam® Therapy work?

If your doctor prescribes sam® therapy for you, they will allow you to rent or purchase the device. To use it, all you have to do is apply the palm-sized applicators at the site of your injury (your medical team may perform a demonstration in-office). Once the machine is activated, you can clip the transmitter onto your belt or slip it into your pocket.

In most cases, sam® should be used for 6 – 8 weeks. Usually, 1 – 4 hours of daily use is recommended. Most patients who have used sam® agree that it is comfortable and easy to use. As you consistently comply with treatment directions, you may notice a gradual decrease in pain at the site of your injury.

sam® may be used as a standalone treatment, or it may be part of a comprehensive pain relief plan that involves other non-invasive therapies.

sam® ultrasound is truly a unique and innovative device! If you are curious about whether it may be able to help you, talk to your orthopedic medical team to learn more.
