Dr. Paul Tortland founded Valley Sports Physicians & Orthopedic Medicine in 1995 upon the completion of his Sports Medicine Fellowship, and he has been a leader and pioneer in the Connecticut medical profession since.
Raised in Stamford, CT, Dr. Tortland completed his undergraduate and graduate studies at the University of Connecticut, where he earned his Masters Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy. He worked for two years both as a marriage and family therapist in his own private practice and also taught at the University of Connecticut Avery Point campus before starting medical school.
Dr. Tortland attended the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine (UNECOM) in Biddeford, Maine, where he was also the recipient of a prestigious one year pre-doctoral fellowship in Osteopathic Principles and Practice and Human Anatomy. After completing an internship in New Jersey, he returned to Maine for his residency at UNCEOM, and then he undertook a fellowship in Sports Medicine at Sports Care/The Toledo Hospital. He and his wife then returned to their native Connecticut to establish his practice.
Professionally, Dr. Tortland is recognized internationally as a leader in regenerative medicine (including prolotherapy, Prolozone, PRP, and stem cell treatments), non-surgical sports medicine, and musculoskeletal ultrasound (MSK US). He lectures and teaches across the country at regional and national medical conferences and training courses. He is board-certified in Sports Medicine, Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine, Family Practice, and he is on staff at both Hartford and St. Francis Hospitals. He was the first person in the world to become certified in regenerative medicine by the American Academy and Board of Regenerative Medicine. He has served as the Head Team Physician for the former New England Blizzard of the women’s professional American Basketball League, and he was a team physician for the University of Hartford for over 20 years. He has also been a team physician for US Figure Skating since 2003.
When he isn’t helping patients, Dr. Tortland is an avid woodworker and accomplished musician. He plays drums, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, and you’ll find him on stage with his church’s worship band every Sunday. Of course, most of his free time is dedicated to his lovely wife and three children.
